You have heard everyone talking about it but what does it mean?? Your an indie artist, what is your brand? How do you make it? “if you build it he will come??” Relax… your brand is you.
It’s your music, your style, your look, your feel, –even your color scheme you choose to go with online. For example, say your a darker indie rock artist, you wear a lot of black, well made antique jewelry, unlaced black boots with a touch of soul on them, you have long hair, you look like a rocker, — your website has influences of your life, your style, –a black and maybe dirty orange or gray color scheme…. and guess what… your Twitter, Youtube, and Facebook all have the same theme! This starts building your brand. Whatever design you choose for your website, needs to carry across to all your networks. Now, some of you are wondering what if I don’t have a website?? Or what If I can not afford a designer….. then what? See below.
Today Im going to teach you..
How to build your website for $50 dollars.
1) PLAN YOUR .COM NAME. First step, use your band name or artist name in your .com if your band name is “Drama Kings and Queens” then your website should be something like dramakingsandqueens.com IF YOUR ARTIST NAME IS TAKEN, add the word music behind it like tommytaylormusic.com
2) Go to http://www.godaddy.com make an account and login.
3) DOMAIN. Search your idea for available domains. You can buy a DOMAIN for 11.99/year
Oh look “DramakingsandQueens.com” is available sweet. Now we are going to buy it. The checkbox should already be selected next to the .com, now click the orange button continue to registration.
Choose registration time for 1yr. You are going to encounter a lot of pop ups, for things you can ADD ON, you dont need them just click no thanks and NEXT.
If you did this right, your checkout should say $12.17 but we are NOT done, we need to add hosting.
Its okay to navigate away from your screen your items will stay in your cart, you need to go to the top green bar and click HOSTING, then select from the drop down menu the second option ‘WORD-PRESS HOSTING”
CHOOSE economy plan 12 months 3.99/month and add to cart. Again, you are going to encounter a lot of pop ups, for things you can ADD ON, you dont need them just click no thanks and NEXT. If you cant find the NEXT button (scroll down)
CHECKOUT!! Your total should be about $50.05
Okay the next step is easy, just go step by step. You will need to tell your domain that it has hosting and set up an admin name, password, and blog title. (blog title is your band name)
In about 24 hours your website will be live.
VERY IMPORTANT! Your new website will now have a login panel at /wp-admin. So if your site is bobdylan.com you will get to the CONTROL PANEL by typing in bobdylan.com/wp-admin
You will type in the admin name, and admin password you made 24 hours ago.
Okay the hard part is done!!!! NOW TO DESIGN!
Once you login in you will notice you are in a ‘dashboard” To the left you see things like post, media, content, pages etc. For now we are going to scroll down to appearance on the left, (we will add content in a bit)
Under appearance click THEMES
Click INSTALL THEME AND select UPLOAD.
NOW. LEAVE THIS HERE FOR A MINUTE. WE ARE GOING TO FIND A THEME THAT FITS YOUR BRAND! OPEN A NEW TAB OR NEW WINDOW (ON A MAC APPLE T IS A SHORTCUT)
In the new window go to the site below and browse free wordpress themes, find one you love. http://wpdaddy.com/
You can DEMO any theme. Pay attention to how it works, and imagine your content there. The DEMO button is under check theme, as well as the DOWNLOAD button. When you find one you like the demo off, click download. (please download this somewhere obvious like your desktop)
Now you should have a file named xxxx.zip located wherever you saved it.
Go back to your that screen on wordpress where we left off.
Click choose file, select the theme you just downloaded and install now.
Now you will see the screen below click activate.
Guess what you now have a .com, with a design on it!!! Your an all-star!
Now PART TWO: ADDING CONTENT
Simple things first,
In the dashboard, click GENERAL, and make sure that your band name is spelled there the way you would like it.
Next, in the dashboard on the left you will see PAGES, go ahead and add, a few pages, add: Biography, Videos, Contact, News, etc.
POSTS: now you will notice the first category in the dashboard is POSTS, this is where you will make posts for all your news, like you have a new single, you make a post here. You can add pictures and video its great!
Now you need to tell wordpress where the posts should all go…… should they go on your homepage? a news tab? To do this on your dashboard you will see at the bottom SETTINGS. Click where it says READING, and you will see this page.
You can select that your “posts” go to your homepage, or a page that you have created above like “NEWS” you can also select HOW MANY posts to show at once, 5 is usually good.
SIDEBAR: Okay now you have some basic stuff filled out. Lets talk about the SIDEBAR.
The sidebar is the long vertical column on the right were you can have a music player and other cool stuff.
You will want to have a music player here and and connect buttons for Facebook, twitter, etc. We are going to add this cool stuff via what is known as WIDGETS, In the dashboard find PLUGINS, –first you install a plugin then it goes to your widgets on your sidebar. Confused? Just try it out.
Go to PLUGINS, and click ADD NEW.
Now you can search keywords like FACEBOOK, Twitter etc, and install the plugin.
Once you find what you like and install and click ACTIVATE.
Go to the dashboard, and under APPEARANCE click WIDGETS.
Now anything you drag from the light gray box “Available widgets” into the dark gray column on the right will appear in the SIDEBAR of your website. Pretty sweet.
There are alot of cool PLUGINS, that you can install and they will always find there way here, and you can then drag them to this column and put them on your page. You may want to spend some time searching cool plugins. So remember, PLUGINS— you install, THEN you go to WIDGETS and drag them to your “Sidebar”
Confused about widgets?
